I've noticed that no one has attached an avatar pic yet (including me).
I haven't done so because I feel like my brain is fried mush after NaNo.
Perhaps that's the case with everyone else.
Has anyone tried yet? If so, were there problems?

I haven't linked to a custom avatar yet - I looked through the default options and decided I liked this artistic bird! (And yes, I first typed in 'bunny rabbit', forgetting what animal the avatar was! Brain fry? Yes, just a little bit over easy.)

I can't for the life of me get a custom avatar to work.

Took me a while to get it working. It won't let you use a third party URL, for example, my 'gravatar' image wouldn't work, but when I uploaded it to my webpage, and used that, it worked. Perhaps try posting the picture here (then it should let you upload it as an attachment), then using the URL for that?

@rinelle: Can you explain again, please, what you're suggesting?

If you're having trouble getting uploaded images to work, make sure that you're specifying the height and width (the two sections beneath the image url box). These HAVE to be filled in, otherwise it won't work.

I just linked to my Avatar at the old Stringing Words, and had no trouble. I did specify the height and width.

I'm not totally sure what is causing it, but the place where you have your avatar uploaded seems to have an effect. Mine didn't work when it was on a third party site, but worked fine on mine. No idea why this is, it could have been the length of the URL, or it could be that some sites just don't work for linking too. Not completely sure. But if it's not working, try a different link.

I uploaded my avatar pic to tinypic, then used the URL it gave me, and I specified width and height.
So, if you're like me and can't find an URL for your avatar picture on your blog or whatever:
Resize your avatar pic if it isn't already under 100px by 100px Go to tinypic.com Upload your avatar pic. Select the URL provided - on the list of options you want the "Direct Link for Layouts," not the option formatted for forums or IMs or whatnot. Open your SW profile page. Find the field for custom avatar pics. Paste in the URL. (I found that the form assigned a size to the picture all on its own, but you should still) assign a size value to the picture. Click "Modify Profile" at the bottom of the page. Profit!

Thanks ET. Sounds like a great solution. And great instructions too!

It doesn't appear to be working for me, Kalen.
I need to do mine again, I know.
