FYI, folks, Tesseracts 22 is OPEN for submissions to May 15. edgewebsite.com/books/tess22/t22-catalog.htmlI was short-listed for them last year. COULD THIS BE THE YEAR? They have pretty specific guidelines. The word limit is 5000, but they prefer shorter. My piece last year had a very literary writing style, and they liked that (I later sold the story to On Spec). Tesseracts is open to Canadians only, so that really waters down the submission field.

Definitely go look at the guidelines! The examples they give of the kinds of stories they are looking for are highly amusing and just wild. My imagination is crackling already!

These two posts together would probably have been disqualified but we should have subbed them anyway!

For the literary writers: Understorey's themed issue, "Age" Understorey Magazine seeks stories of ageing while female. What is too old? What is too young? Why do these questions matter more for women than men? How can we move beyond age in our conversations, workplace, media and perceptions of ourselves? Understorey Magazine publishes stories of women’s lives told through personal essay, poetry, literary fiction, spoken word (audio), illustration and visual art. This call is open to writers and artists who identify as female or non-binary and also identify as Canadian, First Nations or Metis, or currently live in Canada. For Issue 14, we extend a special invitation to writers and artists who are new to their craft but experienced in life! Deadline: September 15, 2018 <1500 words. More information on how to submit here.

Hey! You should write and submit a story to this anthology, which looks really cool! Five Minutes at Hotel StormcoveStories must meet two basic criteria. First, they must take place over the span of five minutes. Second, they must take place at a specific era, location, and time of day within the rooms or grounds of the Hotel Stormcove. This is a shared world anthology. The complete guidelines include more detail about story length (briefly, 4k max), and a short history of the Hotel Stormcove, which is the fictional setting for all of the stories that the creators of this anthology made especially for this project, from what I gather. It's open to most genres (excluding erotica and horror), and it looks like it could be really fun, especially if you're looking for a project that will challenge you to work within the parameters of a specific world. Stories due at the end of January! Payment is 6 cents / word. Complete guidelines here.

BUMP! This is coming up at the end of the month—it's a flash / short story contest, so there's still time, potentially, to put something together for it!

I am thinking of doing this for April camp. Maybe write and submit a certain number of pieces to something from Duotrope. Still sketchy about the details. It has to be a really easy goal as my schedule is up in the air right now.

You could set a goal of one story written, polished, and submitted this month, and up it to two if that goes well?
